Hasmonean was founded by Rabbi Dr Solomon Schonfeld, just after the Second World War. It was a school for refugees and those who needed to learn how to proudly live according to the ethos of Torah im Derech Eretz -being committed Torah Jews and being able to live and be engaged in the modern world.
Today we strive to offer the same vision that belonged to Rabbi Schonfeld. Our Torah education aims to take the children on a journey from learning to read Hebrew in Nursery and Reception to leaving in Year 6 with the skills and the building blocks to become independent Torah learners. Along their journey they will encounter the joys and excitement of being Jewish through our rich curriculum and the Jewish experiences that we provide. They will come to understand the value of good middos and understand the centrality of these good middos to leading a full Jewish life.
We devote 40% of our curriculum to Limmudei Kodesh, ensuring that every basic aspect of Jewish learning is covered from Chumah to Halocho, Chagim and Parshas Hashavua. We recognise however that Judaism does not and cannot stop at the classroom door. Therefore we aim to ignite a love for Jewish learning and practice which the children will take to secondary school and beyond with the support of our families.
