Kodesh Curriculum Statement
Our carefully designed curriculum focuses on a balance between skills that enable our children to become independent Torah learners, imparting general knowledge, and stressing the importance of good middos, fully in line with the school’s JSSM ethos under the guidance of its Principal, Rabbi MS Ginsbury.
It is very much a fit-for-purpose curriculum that is in line with the school’s ethos, charting progress from the time a child enters the main school in Nursery to the time they leave at the end of Year 6.
The morning lessons are devoted to delivering our Chumash curriculum, with the focus to help children become independent learners. This starts in Reception with a focus on Hebrew reading, allowing us to take the first steps in Chumash with the children towards the end of Year 1.
The afternoon lessons are devoted to ensuring children develop a knowledge of Jewish life so that they understand where their personal experiences at home fit into the Jewish cycle of the year and understand that these experiences are part of Jewish communal life. The General Knowledge curriculum gives a foundation that allows our children to make educated Jewish choices long after they have left Hasmonean Primary School. As the children get older we focus on Jewish literacy engaging the the children with learning about Jewish practice from text in our “Divrei Chazal” Curriculum. This expands the children’s experience of Jewish literacy beyond Chumash and ensures that many key Jewish ideas and lessons are not simply taught by teachers, but learnt by the pupils. This thereby gives the children a foundation for their Jewish life beyond Primary School and plants the seeds for us to raise independent engaged Jewish adults, fully living the school’s ethos of Torah im Derech Eretz.
